Surveillance cameras have been able to read license plates for years. With SmartVision 6.5, they are starting to look at the bigger picture. The new version introduces automatic recognition of special-purpose vehicles, allowing the system to identify police cars, taxis, ambulances, and fire trucks directly in the video stream.
The process is fully automatic. Computer vision algorithms analyze footage from a connected camera, detect a vehicle, and determine its category without requiring an operator to intervene. For SmartVision, this adds another layer of context: the system can now understand not only a vehicle's license plate, but also what kind of vehicle it is.
That distinction may sound small, but in access-control scenarios it can make a significant difference. At a residential complex, business center, warehouse, industrial facility, or private parking area, SmartVision can detect an approaching ambulance, police vehicle, or fire truck and generate the appropriate event. That event can then be passed to an access-control system to automatically open a gate or raise a barrier.
In other words, the camera is no longer limited to recording what happened. It can become part of the decision-making chain.
This is particularly useful in situations where traditional license-plate whitelists are not enough. An employee's vehicle can easily be registered in advance. An ambulance responding to an emergency is another matter entirely. It is impossible to know which specific emergency vehicle will arrive, and therefore impossible to add its license plate to a whitelist beforehand. Recognizing the vehicle category solves that problem.
The same approach can be used for taxis, service vehicles, and other specialized transport. Different rules can be assigned to different vehicle types, such as allowing access to selected areas, recording arrival times, generating notifications, or triggering other automated actions.
Special-purpose vehicle recognition can also be used as an analytics tool. SmartVision can automatically record when specific categories of vehicles appear in the camera's field of view and turn those detections into events for further processing. Organizations can use this information to build custom workflows, analyze vehicle activity, or notify responsible personnel without requiring someone to continuously watch live video.
Traditional license plate recognition remains part of the system. The new capability simply gives SmartVision more context. A rule can potentially take into account a vehicle's license plate, its location, and its category at the same time.
With SmartVision 6.5, video surveillance takes another small but meaningful step away from the old model of "the camera records what happens" toward a system where cameras can understand what they see and trigger the appropriate response.
And sometimes the smartest access-control rule is also the simplest one: it's an ambulance, open the gate.
